As exciting as it is to plan your engagement session I know that it can quickly become stressful and overwhelming too, and the last thing I want is for you to stress about this. SO! I’ve decided to write a three part blog series outlining some of the ways to ensure your engagement session is super successful and the final images are ones you’ll want to plaster across the sky.
In this series of posts I’ll be covering tips on what to wear, choosing a location, and a whole bunch of other goodness on how to prepare. It will walk you through pretty much everything you need to know. It’s a bit of a doozy (hence the three part-er) so you may want to refer back to it often throughout the planning of your session. Here we go…
|| SEASON + LOCATION ||
Let’s not mince words here—your choice of season and location will determine the overall look, variety, and mood of your photos. I want you to be invested in your session and take an active role in how your love is documented so, when initially discussing location options, the very first thing we need to do is figure out the vibe you’re going for. Bright & colourful & playful? Or maybe rich & artistic & emotive?
Once we’ve figured this first bit out, I’ll offer suggestions based on the type of style or background you’re wanting that also provide me with good light and composition choices. I have several favourite spots in and around Port Alberni. Places that I can shoot at time and time again and never tire of because each couple brings something unique to them. Providing you with a few options, but not too many, will make choosing the perfect spot much simpler for you. However, if you have your own special spot in mind, just let me know! I would be more than happy to shoot there as well.
It’s important to choose a place that represents you.
So, with this in mind, if the beach is where you spend a lot of your Saturday afternoons, then great – let’s go there! If, on the other hand, you’re only considering that location because it’s pretty & convenient, then maybe it’s not the best place for you. We can shoot in pretty much every location imaginable, it doesn’t necessarily have to be pretty at every corner. It just needs to be a place that fits your style and a place you’ll both feel comfortable at. Even an urban area usually considered ‘ugly’, like a highway underpass or industrial alley, can become the perfect location under the right lighting conditions. City locations do sometimes tend to be a bit chaotic, so finding a little nook that is out of the way of too many onlookers will help create a peaceful environment for us.
Ask yourself this: What kind of couple are you?
Maybe you’re the type who loves being out in nature and we can take a quick hike to your favourite secret waterfall, build a campfire, snuggle up and drink some hot cocoa as the sun sets over the mountains. Or, if the city is more your scene lets go for a walk downtown, explore the farmers market and then grab a latte at your favourite neighbourhood café.
More than anything, I just want your session to truly reflect everything you are and how you love.
